I am often inspired by art to move a certain way musically and alternately inspired by sounds to commit them to a different medium. At a very young age, music and sounds always associated with colors in my mind. Over the years this process has become more complex. The accumulation of auditory, visual, sense memory, and general life experience, have a combined effect on the mind and how it processes and translates incoming and outgoing data. I know that sounds somewhat mechanical, but when you factor in the above mentioned "life experience", you tap into the passion(s) of humanity. This is where the connections between artist and audience happen. I suppose that at it's most basic, the arts are all about translations. Which is why certain people understand your work better than others. I recently had somebody explain to me, what an 18 min. long ambient soundscape meant to them. They broke the piece down into sections and gave me an insight into the images that it evoked.
They paralleled my own imagery during its construction to a "T". This is not always the case as most artists can attest, and It is where the freedom of interpretation comes into play. I, as a musician/artist can only vouch for my translation from one medium to the other. If someone sees or hears it differently, I welcome their insights as additional colors for my pallette, to be utilized on other projects. PS: I do miss good album covers and think online music downloads should come with prints. I'm just sayin... |
